Grief and Loss

Grief can lead to a broken heart.

Have you recently lost something important or someone close? Or perhaps you lost them long ago and never got through it.

Grief is the result of many circumstances – someone close to you passed away, you experienced a breakup or a change in a close relationship, your dream job ended abruptly, or life turned out in a way that you didn’t expect.

Grief and loss are a shared life experience that many people face, but you don’t have to face it alone.

Grief can become overwhelming and cause a variety of emotions. With the loss, you learn to work through ways to adjust to life with what’s missing.

Grief takes time to process.

As a therapist, I won’t tell you that I understand or tell you how you feel.

You already know your feelings but feel stuck in the grieving process.

You reached out for support but didn’t feel understood.

The culture around grief prevents people from talking about it. People may judge you and say, “You’re not over it already,” or “You should just move on.” But every person grieves differently, and there is no set time for processing the grief felt from your loss.

Not all advice is helpful.

Grief becomes taboo to talk about because people try to force us to deal with it in a short time, which isn’t realistic. They offer unhelpful advice.

“Time heals; you’ll be okay.” “They would want you to be happy.” “Be thankful you had them for as long as you did.”

“It’s been two months, and you’re still not back to work?” “It’s been a few weeks, and you’re still crying?”

These comments don’t help. They make us shut down and stop asking for support.

But know, you’re not alone in this.

We can resolve these mixed emotions and help you mend that broken heart. As we work together, you will learn to adapt, recover, and move forward with your life.

It’s okay not to forget. You can still miss what is missing, but we will work to view it differently to make life enjoyable again.

Through therapy, you can learn to process your grief and reframe your mindset.

I’m here to support you every step of the way to move forward once and for all. If you’re ready to take that next step, call (239) 628-0059 or email allison.cobian@proton.me to see if we are a good fit.
