EMDR is an effective method for treating trauma.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized therapy approach for overcoming isolated or complex traumas. This therapeutic approach is a unique, structured process for clients. Sessions can vary depending on the issues’ complexity and how well you focus on trusting the process to ensure the most benefit and progress. Healing can take time; every step forward is a step in the right direction and progress through this journey.
EMDR helps you reprocess, rewrite, and rewire painful memories to promote self-awareness, personal growth and strength, and mind-body healing.
With my help, EMDR will give you the relief and comfort to let go of the past, the thoughts, vivid details, and beliefs surrounding this experience or possibly multiple experiences.
Here’s how EMDR works.
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) occurs while a person dreams during sleep. REM allows the brain to process and store what happens throughout the day. With trauma, specific memories and details do not get processed and stored correctly which can affect our day-to-day functioning, including our sleep patterns. With EMDR, eye movements allow us to process these details on a conscious level instead of during sleep while unconscious – addressing subconscious, unresolved areas of our lives.
We will go through different process phases to help you get to the other side. We will initially create a safe space for you during and outside the session to help manage any situations or triggers that may surface. This practice creates a sense of self-awareness to help understand how these experiences have impacted your life.
We will focus on these memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, using your senses, such as eye movements, sounds, or tapping methods. Bilateral stimulation will allow you to resolve traumatic memories by accessing and rewiring neural networks in your brain. You’ll create new insights, emotions, and positive beliefs.
As we continue, the distress associated with the memory will lessen over time. You may gain new insights and perspectives, seeing the memory differently. Gaining these insights will help you work toward developing healthier ways to cope with the memory’s impact on your life.
